Once upon a time, in a beautiful valley, there lived a kind little princess named Lily. Lily lived in a warm castle with big round windows. The windows looked out over a big, quiet forest. Lily loved the forest, and she loved all the animals who lived there. Every single day, she walked through the tall trees to say hello to her animal friends. She was a very gentle princess, and the animals loved her very much.
It was a quiet, golden evening. The sun was slowly sinking down behind the blue hills. The sky was turning a very soft shade of pink and purple. It was almost time for bed, and the air was cool and still. Princess Lily stood by her favorite castle window and looked out at the trees. She noticed that the forest was very quiet. The birds had stopped their singing, and the little flowers were closing their petals for the night.
"It is bedtime for the forest," Princess Lily whispered to herself. She smiled a soft smile. "I want to help my animal friends have the sweetest, coziest dreams tonight. I will walk through the woods and sing them a gentle lullaby." Lily put on her softest velvet slippers, which made no sound at all. She walked out of the castle gates and into the quiet forest to find her friends.
First, Princess Lily walked down a winding path covered in soft, green moss. The moss felt like a plush carpet under her feet. Soon, she saw a little baby deer named Pip. Pip had beautiful brown spots and big, round, sleepy eyes. He was standing next to his mother, blinking slowly in the fading light. "Hello, sweet Pip," Lily said in a voice as soft as a whisper.
"Hello, Princess Lily," whispered the mother deer. She nuzzled her little baby gently with her warm nose. "Pip is very tired, but his mind is still a little bit busy. He is trying to fall asleep, but he does not know how to quiet his thoughts." Lily knelt down on the soft moss beside them. She wanted to help the little deer feel peaceful and ready for bed.
"I can help," Lily said softly. "Let us think about the quiet things." Princess Lily began to hum a very slow, sweet tune. The tune sounded like a gentle breeze blowing through the trees. She sang, "Sleep, little deer, the day is done. Close your eyes, sleep has begun. The stars are shining bright and clear, you are safe and warm, my dear." Pip listened and let out a long, happy sigh.
Little Pip leaned his head against his mother’s soft side. His long eyelashes began to flutter, and then they closed all the way. He was so warm and comfortable. "Thank you, Princess Lily," the mother deer whispered. "Your song is very peaceful." Lily smiled and waved a tiny wave, then she walked quietly down the path, making sure not to make a single sound to wake the sleeping deer.
Next, Princess Lily walked toward the quiet meadow at the edge of the forest. The grass was covered in cool, silver dew that sparkled in the moonlight. Sitting near a patch of soft clover was a tiny rabbit named Bella. Bella had long, fluffy ears and a little pink nose that wiggled slowly. She was sitting very still, looking up at the big, friendly moon in the sky.
"Hello, little Bella," Princess Lily said, sitting down gently in the grass. "Why are you still awake on this lovely, quiet night?" Bella turned her long ears toward the princess. "I am trying to sleep, Princess Lily, but my feet still want to hop. They hopped all day in the sunny fields, and now they do not know how to rest. My wobbly toes are still awake."
Princess Lily smiled and reached out to gently stroke Bella’s soft, fluffy back. "We can tell your busy feet that it is time to rest," Lily said. She began to sing her soft lullaby again, changing the words just for the little rabbit. She sang, "Rest, little rabbit, rest your toes. No more hopping where the clover grows. Fold your ears and close your eyes, under the sleepy evening skies."
As Lily sang, she gently patted Bella's soft fur. Bella let her long ears flop down beside her face. She stretched her tired little legs out behind her on the soft grass. Her pink nose stopped wiggling, and she closed her eyes with a happy little yawn. She was finally ready to dream. "Goodnight, sweet Bella," Lily whispered, tucking a tiny leaf over the rabbit like a blanket.
Lily walked further into the forest, where the tall oak trees reached up toward the starry sky. Up in the branches of the tallest tree lived a wise old owl named Barnaby. Barnaby had big, round, yellow eyes and beautiful gray feathers. He was sitting on a sturdy branch, looking down at the quiet woods. Barnaby was a very sleepy owl who loved to sleep when the forest was quiet.
"Hello, Barnaby," Lily whispered from the ground. Barnaby blinked down at her. "Hello, Princess Lily," he hooted in a very soft, low voice. "I am trying to rest my wings, but the wind is whispering too loudly in the leaves. The rustling sounds keep waking me up." Lily looked up at the leaves dancing gently in the night breeze, wanting to help him feel peaceful.
"Let us listen to the breeze together," Lily suggested. "If we listen closely, the wind is actually singing a lullaby, too." Lily began to sing along with the sound of the wind, making her voice match the soft rustling of the leaves. She sang, "Hush, wise owl, in your oak tree tall. The night is a blanket over us all. The wind is a whisper, a sleepy sigh, singing a quiet, soft lullaby."
Barnaby listened to the princess and the wind singing together. The sound was so steady and peaceful. He tucked his head under his soft wing and puffed out his feathers to stay warm. Within a few moments, the wise old owl was fast asleep, breathing in and out in a slow, steady rhythm. Lily felt a wave of happiness in her heart. All her animal friends were finding their sleep.
Now, the forest was completely quiet. There was no more wiggling, no more hopping, and no more rustling. The little deer was sleeping, the tiny rabbit was sleeping, and the wise old owl was sleeping. Princess Lily walked slowly back to her warm castle. She felt very sleepy, too. Her velvet slippers felt extra soft, and the night air felt like a cool, gentle hug.
She climbed up the stone stairs to her cozy bedroom. Her big, fluffy bed was waiting for her with clean sheets and a warm purple quilt. She climbed into bed and looked out the window one last time. The stars were blinking down like tiny nightlights, watching over the castle and the forest. Lily knew that all the animals were safe and warm in their homes.
She pulled the soft quilt up to her chin and closed her eyes. She took a deep, slow breath of the sweet, quiet night air. In her mind, she sang one final, silent lullaby for herself and the whole forest. She felt so safe, so cozy, and so very loved. Within moments, the kind little princess fell fast asleep, joining her forest friends in sweet, happy dreams.
